Intentions

PZ Gallery, under the new direction of Charles Roff, is soon to become an artistic and cultural centre for Penzance and the south west of Cornwall. With its wonderful architecture and privileged location an aim of the PZ gallery is to make a long term investment in fine-art and through this help to regenerate the harbour area of Penzance. The gallery will be showing a wide range of photography, including contemporary and archival exhibits. Doubly the gallery will serve as an educational resource centre to make use of and build upon our already extensive archive. Schools and colleges in particular are to benefit. An ongoing list of proposed exhibitions is contextual to the landscape and culture of Cornwall.

History

The quasi art-deco building was constructed in the 1950 as the Taylor's and then Vospers car showroom. It became part of a series of new art-deco buildings (including the Jubilee Pool) along the promenade of Penzance. During the 1980's many business in Penzance relocated to the new industrial estate on the outskirts of town, after which Vospers was unsuccessful. The car showroom was abandoned and then followed by various transient businesses in the 1980’s and 90’s. Unfortunately for Penzance the site has been vacant in recent years.
