The Opening of PZ Gallery
The South West of Cornwall is a prime destination for summer holidays amongst British and International holiday makers as it has a wide range of attractions to offer. However St Ives is often thought to have a richer culture than Penzance due to the influence of the Tate. The PZ gallery will offer a large space within Penzance for people interested in photography to visit. The art deco building was constructed in the 1950’s and was a garage for some time before many failed businesses in the 1980’s and 90’s. In recent years the site has been vacant. An aim of the PZ gallery is to make use of this wonderful building and its privileged location and through this help to regenerate the harbour area of Penzance.
The PZ Gallery, under the new direction of Charles Roff, is soon to become an artistic and cultural centre for Penzance and the south west of Cornwall. The gallery will be showing a wide range of photography, including contemporary and archival exhibits. Doubly the gallery will serve as an educational resource centre hoping to make use of and build upon Charlie Roff’s already extensive archive. Schools and colleges in particular are to benefit. An ongoing list of proposed exhibitions is contextual to the landscape and culture of Cornwall.
The opening Exhibition, starting on Friday 21st July 2006, will showcase Charles Roff’s Works in Progress. The exhibition will combine old and new work by the photographer of the nude female form and surrounding landscape. The pieces highlight different printing techniques.
